ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: Kate Andrews

Kate Andrews was born in 1992 in Toronto, Canada. She began her undergraduate studies at Concordia University in Montreal, finishing her Bachelors Degree at the University of Guelph. Kate has expanded her practice to involve photography and installation, yet her practice remains largely influenced by her foundations mediums of drawing and abstract painting. Over the course of the residency, I aim to develop a series of larger-scale drawings which encapsulate the themes mentioned in the description of my artistic discipline. The drawings will be completed with pencil and/or fine-tip pen, with the aim of achieving a high level of precision, resembling, in a way, technical drawings or architectural drafts. The extent of the series will be left open to determine upon arrival at the Shiro Oni studios; I would like to allow the environment, atmosphere and technical parameters of the studio itself play a role in the formation of my project.

私は1992年、カナダのトロントで生まれました。モントリオールのコンコルディア大学で学士課程を始め、その後ゲルフ大学で学士号を取得しました。私は活動の幅を写真やインスタレーションにも広げていますが、基礎となるドローイングや抽象絵画の影響は今も強く残っています。レジデンス滞在中は、自身の芸術活動のテーマを反映した、大型のドローイング作品のシリーズを制作したいと考えています。作品は鉛筆や細字ペンを用いて、技術図面や建築の下絵のように精密に仕上げることを目指します。シリーズの規模については、シロオニスタジオに到着してから決めたいと思っており、スタジオの環境や雰囲気、制作上の条件が作品づくりに自然に影響を与えることを大切にしたいと考えています。
