Mariana Lobão (Portugal, 1991) is a visual artist based in Amsterdam. Her practice encompasses the fabrication of objects and contexts that connect ideas of containment and impermanence. She employs publishing strategies in the service of works that aim at dissecting our relationship with objects, from their standalone qualities to their activation through environmental, ritualistic or habitual means. I intend to use my time at the residency to experiment and conduct research for a new series of sculptural works, which I aim to complete by the end of my time at Shiro Oni. Inspired by Roger Caillois’ ‘Mask of Medusa’, I’m interested in developing a series of works inspired by mimicry, camouflage, disguise and metamorphosis—phenomena performed by insects that also offer a conceptual lens for exploring the psychology of the gaze.

1991年ポルトガル生まれ、現在アムステルダムを拠点に活動するビジュアルアーティストです。私は「包み込むこと（容れもの）」と「はかなさ」という概念を結びつけるような、オブジェや文脈を形にしています。出版的な手法も取り入れながら、私たちとモノとの関係性を明らかにするような作品を展開しています。それは、オブジェ単体としての性質だけでなく、環境や儀式的・習慣的な行為を通じてどのように意味をなすのかにも焦点を当てます。滞在期間中は、実験とリサーチを重ねながら、新しい立体作品シリーズの制作に取り組みたいと考え、滞在の終わりまでに、そのシリーズを完成させることを目指しています。また、ロジェ・カイヨワの『メドゥーサと仲間たち』に着想を得て、擬態・カモフラージュ・変装・変態といったテーマに関心を持っています。これらは昆虫が見せる現象でもあり、「見る／見られる」という関係や、その背後にある心理を考えるための視点として捉えています。
