2027 Residency Schedule

Our Spring Anagama Residency is reserved for artists working solely with clay.

Artists participating in our Spring Residency Group will fire our anagama (wood-fired) kiln. The kiln is located across the river from Onishi on a nearby mountain. It takes several days to load the anagama, meticulously packing and wadding between every adjoining surface. The kiln then requires 4 days of 24 hour stoking, burning through several cords of wood. Artists are given 24-hour access to private studios and our ceramics facility at the Shiro Oni Art Center. Each artist’s studio is unique, using repurposed wood and materials from Kanezawa Park. Workshops can be organized based on artists’ interests, ranging from washi paper making, traditional calligraphy, indigo dying, and Japanese cooking.

Please note that anagama firing group has an additional 10,000 Japanese Yen (JP¥) materials charge.  This covers artist clay, glaze, wood, cabin rental, fuel etc.

Exhibition: May 8th – 9th

The residency will culminate with a group exhibition on the last weekend. The exhibition will take place at the Shiro Oni Art Center in the Naga Kura Exhibition Space.

On May 9th, we will host artist talks and a farewell party for the artists in residence.

Our Early Summer residency group is open to artists working across all disciplines.

Shiro Oni Studio’s 6-week residency provides artists with uninterrupted time in Japan’s countryside to focus on their work. Artists in residence have 24-hour access to the Shiro Oni Art Center Workspace, which holds 9 individual artist studios, a woodshop, and our ceramic facilities. Each artist’s studio is unique, using repurposed wood and materials from Kanezawa Park. Workshops can be organized based on artists’ interests, ranging from washi paper making, traditional calligraphy, indigo dying, and Japanese cooking.
