ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: Rebecca Stenfors
Rebecca Stenfors
UK, Born Sweden
Stay: August 11th to September 22nd
I am an artist, writer and filmmaker based in London with a Finnish-Swedish background. My practice meditates on homecoming as a chosen fiction where narration, diary-keeping and oral storytelling traditions become processes of returning to that which is out of reach (both in time and in place).
I would like to use this residency as the setting for a film project about papermaking and the preservation of memory. During the six-week period, I will work between writing and analogue filmmaking so as to capture this substrate for remembering through a study of the 1500-year old process of ‘washi’ papermaking. The writing will form the script for a narration in the film, which will in turn become the final instalment of a trilogy of artists’ books that I have been working on together with an independent publisher called The Silent Academy, loosely connected by the idea of storytelling as a way of locking a memory.
