ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: Liyang Zhang
Liyang Zhang
USA (Born Japan)
October 13th to November 24th
Liyang Zhang is a Chinese-Canadian architect and ceramic artist, born in Osaka, Japan, and based in New York City. Her practice investigates the elemental qualities of architecture, light, material, and form, on an intimate scale through clay. By balancing thrown, pinched, and slab-built techniques, she cultivates a dialogue between hand and earth, guiding each piece to emerge from the clay’s innate character.
If selected for the Shiro Oni Residency, I would like to expand my Quarry Cup Series on a larger scale, exploring new clays, glazes, and firing methods unique to Japan. I’d love to experiment with Japan’s unique clays, glazes, and firing techniques, allowing each new material to spark new variations in form.
