ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: Helen Hastings

October 13th to November 24th

Helen Hastings (she/they) is a New York City–based ceramic artist working through a handbuilt process, shaping every form directly by touch. Her vessels move between sculpture and function, resisting strict categories and allowing form to unfold on its own terms — a way of working that echoes her own relationship to fluidity, identity, and space.

My practice is handbuilt and intuitive, shaped by touch. I allow forms to emerge gradually, following the clay’s movement instead of directing it into predetermined outcomes.
During the residency, I hope to explore new shapes and surfaces, creating vessel-based forms or sculptures that respond directly to the kiln’s atmosphere. I am especially interested in the ways ash, heat, and time may alter surface and texture in ways that are not possible in my current studio setting.
