ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: Cheng Qin

Cheng Qin

United States, Born China

Stay: August 11th to September 22nd

Cheung Qin is an interdisciplinary sculptor based in Cambridge, MA, with a background in architectural design, sculpture, and digital fabrication. His practice centers on creating actant instruments—inanimate artifacts or machines that autonomously perform and embody narratives of resilience. By pushing these artifacts beyond their static nature, his work explores fleeting, affective moments that exist between memory and speculation.

Although my practice is informed by architectural thinking, it takes form through sculpture: through objects, fragments, joints, and surfaces that make material behavior visible. This residency will allow me to deepen that trajectory through hands-on experimentation, drawing, and writing.
During the residency, I will develop a series of sculptural studies that isolate and amplify particular exchanges between matter and environment.
