ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: Hilary Sweatman

Hilary Sweatman is a ceramicist and neuroscience PhD candidate based in Montreal. She works primarily on the wheel, drawn to the rhythm and repetition of throwing. Her academic research focuses on memory and communication in autistic children, and her ceramic practice reflects similar themes—balance, connection, and the strength of individual voices. During the residency, I want to expand my skill set by learning handbuilding techniques to complement and enhance my thrown work and to further explore my artistic vision. As a neuroscience PhD candidate, I study memory and communication in autistic children. I’m curious about how tactile processes can express cognitive ideas and how art can evoke emotion and spark curiosity about science.

私はモントリオールを拠点に活動する陶芸家で、神経科学の博士課程にも在籍しています。主にろくろを用いて制作しており、成形の中に生まれるリズムや反復に魅力を感じています。学術研究では、自閉スペクトラム症の子どもたちにおける記憶とコミュニケーションに焦点を当てています。一方で、陶芸の制作活動にも似たテーマが反映されており、「バランス」「つながり」、そして一人ひとりの声の持つ力といった要素を探求しています。滞在期間中はろくろでの制作に加えてさらなる発展のために手びねりを学び技術の幅を広げ、自分の創作の軸をさらに深めたいと思っています。私は神経科学の博士課程に在籍しており、自閉スペクトラム症の子どもたちにおける記憶とコミュニケーションについて研究しています。触覚的な制作プロセスが、どのように認知的な概念を表現できるのか、そしてアートがどのように感情を呼び起こし、科学への好奇心を喚起できるのかに関心を持っています。
