Artist in Residence: Teresa Stores

I am a storyteller, probably because I grew up in a huge extended American Southern family and spent much of my childhood hiding under the kitchen table listening to my elders’ gossip and fables of the past. I love the local Japanese folktales here!

The novel I am writing here is called Ten Types of Women, after the series of ukyoe-i prints by Utamaro Kitagawa. My protagonist is an American art teacher and artist who inherits a small house in rural Japan, to which she returns each summer throughout her life to practice her art. The practice of ukyoe-i becomes a metaphor for the woman’s layering and uncovering of her true identity over 50 years of her life.
