I am a practising artist living in Southern Queensland, Australia and am 73 years old and in good health. I have worked as a structural design engineer but over the past 15 years have shifted my focus to visual arts and recently completed the PhD program at the University of Southern Queensland. My research investigated how art can capture the human relationship with nature and the practice was centred around the connection made with nature by using local found materials in ceramic works. The final work I made was an unfired sculpture of black soil. In 2023 I attended a residency at Domaine de Boisbuchet in France and in 2024 I attended residencies in Kristinestadt Finland and at Guldagergaard Denmark at the Danish Institute of ceramic research.

I would like to continue my experimentation and research in my ceramic practice. Key areas are the use of local materials and traditional firing techniques in the anagama kiln. I would propose to make several sculptural works for the firing. Previously I have only experienced wood firing in the residency I attended in Denmark but had some successful results form that firing. I am very interested in traditional Japanese ceramic methods and techniques and am attracted to the works of contemporary Japanese artists like Izumita Yukiya and Mihara Ken. In previous residencies I gained greatly form the exchange with other artists and look forward to informal discussions and sharing of experience.

私はオーストラリア・南クイーンズランド在住のアーティスト、73歳の健康体です。これまで構造設計エンジニアとして働いていましたが、過去15年間は視覚芸術に活動の軸を移し、最近では南クイーンズランド大学で博士号を取得しました。私の研究は、芸術が人間と自然の関係をどのように表現できるかを探求するもので、制作は地元で採取した素材を用いた陶芸作品を通して自然とのつながりを表現することに焦点を置いていました。ごく最近の作品は、黒土を用いた焼成前の彫刻作品です。

2023年にはフランスのドメーヌ・ド・ボワビュシェでレジデンスに参加し、2024年にはフィンランドのクリスティネシュタットおよびデンマークのギュルダーガード（デンマーク陶芸研究所）でのレジデンスにも参加しました。

今後も陶芸制作における実験とリサーチを継続したいと考えています。特に、土地の素材の活用や、穴窯による伝統的な焼成技法に強い関心があります。レジデンスでは、焼成に向けて複数の立体作品を制作する予定です。これまでに木材焼成を経験したのはデンマークでのレジデンスのみですが、その際には一定の成果を得ることができました。

また、日本の伝統的な陶芸技法に深い関心を持っており、泉田之也氏や三原研氏といった現代日本の作家の作品にも強く惹かれています。これまでのレジデンスでは、他のアーティストとの交流から多くを学んできました。今回も、日常的な対話や経験の共有を通して、新たな学びを得られることを楽しみにしています。
