Ceramics

Courtney Cho is a Chinese American artist creating coil-built vessels and sculptures, operating as artifacts as though they have lived past lives, waiting to be unburied, rediscovered and reinterpreted. Minimalist raw white porcelain sculptures sit alongside maximalist glazed forms. That balance of contradictions presents itself throughout Cho’s works. These works revisit vignettes from her childhood with confrontational thoughts of mortality to create ethereal pieces venturing into the absurd. Being raised as the eldest daughter of immigrants and as a first-generation Asian-American, Cho was expected to follow a traditional path. From a young age, she had to prioritize practicality over creativity. Cho started ceramics as a way to forge a new path, one that allows her to dive deep into her imagination and fully express her artistry. It’s as if Cho is making up for lost time, finally giving herself the ability to experience a world she couldn’t partake in before.
