Haley Hodge is a painter based in New York primarily working in oil and acrylic on canvas. Her paintings focus on spatial memory and our sense of belonging in the places that we live and spend time in. Painting cityscapes, whether at the human or skyline level, is a method by which Haley remains present, practices fidelity to the place she is in, and considers what it means to share responsibility in what happens there. I would love the opportunity to work on a series of paintings specific to Onishi – the people, the businesses, the river, the homes, the light, the weather. I have never had the opportunity to create paintings trying to capture a place that is so new to me, and I would be so excited to discover what stylistic and conceptual evolutions could come out of that endeavor at your studio.

私はニューヨークを拠点に活動する画家で、主にキャンバスに油彩やアクリルを用いて制作しています。作品は、空間の記憶や、私達が暮らし時間を過ごす場所に対して抱く「居場所の感覚」をテーマにしています。人の目線から見た街並みや、都市のスカイラインを描くことは、「今ここ」に意識を向け、その土地と誠実に向き合い、「そこで起こる出来事に自分も責任を分かち合うとは？」ということを考える一つの方法です。私は、鬼石という土地に根ざした絵画シリーズを制作したいと考えています。そこに暮らす人々、商店、川、家々、光、空模様など、この場所ならではの風景を描いてみたいです。これまで私は、自分にとってこれほど新しい土地を題材に作品制作をした経験はありません。そのため、シロオニスタジオでの制作を通して、自分の表現や作品のコンセプトがどのように変化し発展していくのかを発見できることをとても楽しみにしています。
