Em Dubovoy is a multidisciplinary designer and artist based in New York’s Hudson Valley. As a child of immigrants and a first-generation American, her artistic practice is rooted in themes of identity, home, and duality. She explores the tactile and symbolic qualities of clay and other natural materials as means of grounding—both physically and emotionally. Her work navigates the relationships between softness and sharpness, light and shadow, digital and physical, along with other core dichotomies. Em’s background in design informs an approach that balances playful experimentation with functional intent. Guided by an intuitive process, her work expands connections between her inner and outer worlds.

During the residency, I plan to develop a series of ceramic-based sculptures that explore light, form, and modularity—works that stack, hang, and emit light. I’ll be primarily handbuilding using different coil, slab, and sculpting techniques. In this way, my aim is to integrate my recent experiences in Japan with my relationship to tactility and commitment to creating work that bridges function and feeling. I’d also love to learn Washi paper making and textile dyeing to expand my practice into multimedia forms.

I see this residency as a rare opportunity to deepen my language skills, collaborate with local makers, and immerse myself in a creative community. My goal is to walk away from Shiro Oni with a meaningful body of work rooted in the present that not only contributes to my own artistic growth, but also honors its origins.

エム・ドゥボヴォイは、ニューヨーク州ハドソンバレーを拠点に活動する多岐の領域に渡るデザイナー兼アーティストです。移民の子であり第一世代のアメリカ人として、彼女の制作はアイデンティティや家、そして二重性といったテーマに根ざしています。土やその他の自然素材が持つ触覚的、象徴的な性質を通して、身体的にも感情的にも自分を支える拠りどころを探求しています。

彼女の作品は、やわらかさと鋭さ、光と影、デジタルとフィジカルといった対照的な要素の関係性、そうした根源的な二項の間を行き来するものです。デザインのバックグラウンドを活かし、遊び心のある実験性と実用性のバランスを取りながら制作に取り組んでいます。直感に導かれたプロセスの中で、内面と外界とのつながりを広げていく表現を行っています。

滞在中は、光や形といった一つ一つの要素を探求する陶芸を基盤とした立体作品のシリーズを制作する予定です。作品は積み重ねたり吊るしたり、光を放ったりするもので、主に紐作り、たたら作り、彫刻などの手びねり技法を用いて制作します。こうして、日本での体験を、触覚への関心や、機能と感覚をつなぐ作品づくりへの取り組みと統合することを目指しています。また、和紙づくりやテキスタイル染色を学び、表現を様々な領域へ広げたいと考えています。

このレジデンスを、言語スキルを深め、地元の作り手とコラボレーションし、創造的なコミュニティに没入する貴重な機会と捉えています。シロオニを離れるときには、今に根ざした意義ある作品群を手にし、それが自身の芸術的成長に貢献すると同時に、作品の起源を尊重するものであることを目指しています。
