Cali Almy has been exploring clay for over 4 decades as an artist and teacher. Her work represents an inquiry of nature at times depicting a macro or expansive view across a marsh or coastline, and at times intended to explore more intimate scenes. She embraces the challenge of creating simple forms in clay and exploring more expressive surfaces. Cali has taught in high school and community art spaces for over 2 decades and holds an MFA from UMass, Amherst. After over two decades of teaching, she pivoted in 2019 and completed a two year as an Artist in Residence program at the Worcester Center for Crafts with a focus in Ceramics. She currently spends creative time in studios in Westport, MA and Providence, RI.

My ceramic practice is rooted in vessel-making: round vase forms, bottles, and bowls, primarily thrown on the wheel. I imagine beginning the residency by centering myself through this familiar process, allowing the repetition of form to ground me in the new environment. From there, I anticipate expanding into experimentation—exploring surface, scale, and technique in response to what I encounter during my time in Japan. The residency will also be an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between tradition and innovation in my own work, and how my practice might evolve by being in dialogue with Japanese aesthetics and history, including the opportunity to be involved in all parts of the Anagama kiln firing.

カリ・アルミは、40年以上にわたり陶芸家および教育者として土と向き合ってきました。彼女の作品は自然への探究を表しており、湿地帯や海岸線を俯瞰するような広がりのある風景から、より親密な情景を描くものまで多岐にわたります。カリは、粘土でシンプルな形を作ることを楽しむとともに、表面の表現を探求することにも取り組んでいます。

20年以上にわたり高校や地域のアートスペースで教鞭をとり、マサチューセッツ大学アマースト校で修士号を取得しています。長年の教育活動を経て、2019年に方向転換し、ウスター・クラフト・センターで2年間のアーティスト・イン・レジデンスプログラムを修了し、陶芸を専門に学びました。現在は、マサチューセッツ州ウェストポートとロードアイランド州プロビデンスのスタジオで制作活動を行っています。

私の陶芸制作は器づくりに根ざしており、主にろくろで丸みをおびた花器や瓶、ボウルを制作しています。レジデンスの初めは、この慣れ親しんだ制作プロセスを通して自分を整え、形の反復によって新しい環境に心を落ち着けることから始めたいと考えています。そこからさらに制作の幅を広げ、滞在中に出会うさまざまな要素に応じて、表面表現やスケール、技法の実験に取り組む予定です。また、このレジデンスは、自身の制作における伝統と革新の関係を見つめ直す貴重な機会でもあり、日本の美意識や歴史との対話を通して表現を進化させる場になると考えています。穴窯の全工程に関わる経験も、その一部として生かしたいと思っています。
