Paula Ruuttunen (b. 1964)
I am a ceramic artist, designer, and craftsman from Mikkeli Finland. I graduated as an artisan in 1993 and completed my advanced professional qualification in design in 2019. I have also received professional training at the Arabia factory, which was a biggest ceramic factory in Finland for many decades.
I have been creating my own ceramic collections for over 20 years. My dishes are sold by retailers such as Artek, and they are used by several fine dining restaurants in Finland. My work is regularly exhibited in various exhibitions across Finland, and I have also participated in exhibitions abroad.
My artistic practice is based on traditional methods and serial objects. I am especially interested in objects that have a function of some kind. I create bowls, cups, teapots, and bottles, as well as other art objects. The techniques I use in ceramics are centuries old. I shape clay by hand on a rotating platform, and I prefer to fire my products in a wood kiln. Wood firing is my passion, the kiln is more than a tool, it brings soul to the art work.
